five-plus years have passed since starbucks opened their location on newport avenue in the old java joe's building. this was fairly controversial at the time as ocean beach has a tradition of opposing chain stores. there looked to be significant protests set to occur, and then 9/11 happened. so now the place has been open for awhile and seems to be quite busy. i imagine new residents aren't aware of the history. i still won't set foot in there. not sure what's going on with OBGO -- their website is gone....

Under OB in wikipedia, it says there were bumper stickers printed up that said, "No Corporate Whores On O.B. Shores"! Lots and lots of changes on Newport over the years. More antique stores than I care for. I am always sad that the Strand Theater didn't continue.
